Just like every other year I've gotten to attend Mardi Gras, I was excited like a little kid by the time the parade started. I got to hangout with some good friends by the park until we heard the blaring signal that lets the crowd know the parade is rolling nearby and to make way in the streets. Throngs of people ten deep lined each sidewalk, cheering and yelling "Throw Me Something, Mister" for beads, wooden nickels, cups, stickers and other souvaneers. This years theme was "25 Years Wasted", and in the comic tradition of Krewe De Vieux managed to make fun of the city, of various politicians and policies in New Orleans and the United States in general- like the parade float with the spinning teacup and a bust of Sarah Palin being gobbled up bu a Cathulu-esque figure.
In between floats lots of great New Orleans brass bands played, and got almost all of the parade goers really dancing in the streets. That wasn't hard, given that the music was great and most of the parade goers who were of age were quite drunk. Half of the locals watched the parade twice, like my friends and I did. If you know the route which winds all through the Marigny and the Lower French Quarter, you can cross past the tail end of the parade and hop a few streets up to catch a different view and more toys from the parade.
Check back for more photo's of Mardi Gras as I get them around the city. :-)
